Beginning Band
Beginning Band is open to anyone wishing to learn an instrument and participate
in the band program. The student must meet with'the Band Director and should
show an interest in playing an instrument. If the student cannot provide an
instrument, he/she may not be able to play their instrument of choice, depending
on what the school has available. Grades 9-12
Concert Band
Concert Band is a performing ensemble primarily for 9th and lOth graders and
any other less proficient older students. This band performs at the Christmas
concert, Christmas assembly program, Priday, GMEA District Band Festival, spring
concert, and the annual spring band trip. Members of this band are strongly encouraged
to participate in Marching Band, Jazz Band, District Honor Band, Solo and Ensemble
Festival. Attendance is required for a few after-school rehearsal and all concerts.
One elective credit per year plus one elective musical credit of the student's
choice. Band meets for the entire year .Grades 9-12
Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band is the top ensemble for wind and percussion players. This group
performs at the Christmas concert, Christmas assembly program, Priday, GMEA District
Band Festival. Spring concert, the annual spring band trip, and a number of other
community and school events. Members of this band should participate in the Marching
Band, Jazz Band, District Honor band, AII-State Band, Solo and Ensemble Festival,
and Governor's Honors Program. Attendance is required at some after-school rehearsals
and all concerts. This course requires an audition for enrollment. One elective
credit per year plus one elective musical credit of the student's choice. Band
meets for the entire year. Grades 9-12
Music Theory
This course is designed to give the student an opportunity to understand and
learn the mechanics of music. Emphasis is on written, oral, keyboard, and listening
skills in music, including history , note writing, composing, and note reading.
Offered to all students in addition to serious music students. Grades 9-12
Music Appreciation
This course is designed to provide students with a variety of musical experiences
that will contribute toward their aesthetic and cultural development and their
overall education. Some of the activities will involve listening skills, historical
context of music, performance skills, and general appreciation of various types
and styles of music. Open to all students. Grades 9-12
Orchestra
This is a string orchestra class for students serious about improving musical
knowledge-ability and technical skills. Emphasis is on performance of the standard
classical literature with popular/seasonal music in appropriate settings. The
orchestra performs 7-10 concerts each year, including a full orchestra with winds
and percussion. Attendance is required at after school I;ehearsals and concerts.
Orchestra director's approval required. Grades 9-12
