Biology
Biology is a survey course that covers the six basic concepts of unity and
diversity, interaction of living things and the environment, complementarity
of structure and function, continuity of life, homeostasis and change through
time. This course is required for graduation. Grade 9
Physical Science
Physical Science is a study of matter and energy and their inseparable relationships.
For some students this may be their only formal study in the phenomena of
the physical world; for others, it will serve as an introduction to the more
advanced courses studying matter (chemistry) and energy (physics). Grades
10-11
Chemistry
Chemistry is a survey of chemical principles and applications, mostly at the
inorganic level. The study includes the structure and properties of matter.
The course stresses the basic laws of chemistry, principles of reactions,
and chemical bonding. Emphasis is placed on using factor-label mathematics
for solving quantitative solutions for chemical problems. Applications and
descriptive chemistry are incorporated within the chemical program. Grades
10-11
A.P. Chemistry
A.P. Chemistry , a college level course for students in grades 11 and 12, is
a systematic treatment of fundamental chemical principles. Emphasis is placed
on the
interrelationship of chemistry and mathematics. It covers all topics and concepts
in the high school chemistry course, but in more detail. Additional topics
are thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, molecular structure and covalent
bonding theories. This course is two units in length (two blocks) and students
may take the A.P. Chemistry exam in the spring. An acceptable score on this
test will give the student college credit. Grades 11-12
A.P. Biology
A.P. Biology is college level course of experiments, lectures, and readings
in biology for 11 th and 12th grade students with above average ability and
interest in science. This course covers the same material as an introductory
college course with the specific intention of preparing students for success
on the A.P. Biology exam given in the spring. This course is two units (two
blocks) in length. Grades 11-12
Physics
Physics is a survey course covering the areas of mechanics, electricity and
magnetism, heat and kinetic theory, wave theory and sound, and nuclear physics.
Grades 11-12
Ecology
This environmental studies course for students in grades 10-12 deals with the
relationship between man and the biophysical environment. Its aim is to make
students aware of the environmental relationships and processes and teach
them to understand the importance
of solving environmental problems that may arise. Grades 10-12
Human Physiology
A course for students in grades 10-12, Human Physiology is concerned with the
fundamental concept of what comprises a normal functioning human body. Human
anatomy presents the structural study of the parts of the system, and physiology
provides an understanding of the biological processes that constitute life.
Grades 10-12
Astronomy
Astronomy is a science course that includes studies of planets, stars, meteors,
comets, asteroids, and other bodies. Meteorology and geology concepts will also
be included in the course. Grades 11-12
Zoology
Zoology is a laboratory course that includes the study of mammals, birds, reptiles,
amphibians, fish, starfish, arthropods, mollusks, worms, jellyfish, and sponges.
It utilizes dissection labs and hands-on studies of representatives of each
group. This course is more detailed than biology and is designed for average
and above average students who have an interest in the animal kingdom. Grades
11-12
