Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Back to Guidance

This developmental condition requires continuous and consistent management by parents and teachers. No single technique or trick will solve the classroom problems of a student with ADD. If your child has been diagnosed with ADD, be sure to let his teachers and/or grade level counselor know. The department of Psychological Services and School Health Services of the Muscogee County School District will present a three-part series on ADD beginning on September 18, 2003 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Wynnton Elementary School Auditorium, 2303 Wynnton Road. The first session presents a basic overview of Attention Deficit Disorder and the latest research on this very complex condition. The second presentation deals with the latest medications available for the treatment of ADD and will be held on November 20. The final installment in this series, on February 19, 2004, will provide parent strategies to assist in the primary challenges of schooling such as organization, note taking, homework and class work.

Quick tips for home:
• Establish daily schedule of activities that changes very little from day to day. This will enable the child to get into a routine.
• Set aside time for 1-to-1 contact to review assignments.
• Contract with student for expectations (including effort, accuracy and neatness), target behaviors, and successful reaching of goals.
• Stay in close contact with teachers to gain clarity in their policies and daily procedures.
• Teach your child, help your child, but DO NOT take the responsibility from your child to get a good education. Students must learn that they are accountable for their choices and actions – the earlier, the better.
