Scholarship Opportunities

 

Whitney Michelle Keys Drug-Free Youth Award                         Deadline:  3/11/04

A senior must exhibit the following: 1) High moral character; 2) Positive leadership characteristics; 3) grade point-average of 2.5 or higher in core academic courses; 4) be an active member of an anti-drug group such as Teen Advisors, Young Life, church or youth groups or any organization which promises a drug-free lifestyle.  See Mrs. Hamby for an application.

 

Patricia Jackson Howard Memorial Scholarship                          Deadline:  3/15/04

Historic Columbus Foundation, Inc. provides a $1,000 scholarship in memory of Patricia Jackson Howard, Executive Director from 1989-1992.  Graduating seniors must submit an application, transcript, essay, letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or social studies teacher by the deadline.  Applicants must be involved in extracurricular activities and exhibit qualities such as perseverance, congeniality, optimism and loyalty.  Title of essay:  Preserving the Past to Deserve the Future.  See Mrs. Hamby for more details and an application.

 

Birch Telecom                                                                                   Deadline:  3/31/04

The Birch Telecom Communication Rocks/ Scholarship Program & Essay Contest will award 24 scholarships to college-bound high school seniors. To enter, applicants will need to: 1) write a brief essay abut the value of competition (lower prices, better service, more innovative products, etc.); 2) have taken and received scores for the ACT or SAT; 3) be scheduled to enroll at a college or university in the fall of 2004.  Application can be downloaded at www.birch.com/scholarship.

 

Alpha Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.     Deadline:  4/1/04

Male students are invitied to apply for a book scholarship. Scholarship criteria includes: Minimum GPA 2.5; School and community involvement, Financial need, Interview, Three letters of reference, SAT score of 850, and an essay entitled “Why I Want to Attend College.”  Mrs, Hamby has more information and applications.

 

Georgia State UAW Community Action Program                Deadline:  4/1/04                                                                                      Four scholarships in different amounts will be awarded to seniors scheduled to graduate from high school and planning to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student in fall 2004. Competition will be based on an essay entitled “How Have Unions Helped America’s Working Families.”  The length of the essay should be not less than 300 words and not more than 500 words.  Interested?  See Mrs. Hamby for more details.

 

 

 

Dr. William Henry Shaw Scholarship                                              Deadline: 4/2/04             Requirements include that student be a graduate of the Muscogee County School System and plan to major in the field of education at Columbus State University.  Mrs. Hamby has applications.

 

·        Representatives from Andrew College will be in the HHS cafeteria during lunch on Wednesday, March 10, 2004.  Seniors who complete applications at that time will not have to pay the $20 processing fee.  If you plan to apply to Andrew College, let either Mrs. Hamby or Ms. Honeycutt know in advance so that you can take a copy of transcript with you.

7:00 PM—HHS Auditorium

 

A parent must attend one of the two meetings in order to receive cap, gown, graduation announcements and/or Balfour products.

 

No admittance after 7:10 PM!!!


College Planning Timeline:  January to August

January:

q       Apply for financial aid by completing and submitting your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1.  Use the FAFSA application that was given out in advisement of online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Forms submitted online will receive results faster. 

q       Check with your prospective colleges about financial aid application forms and requirements.

q       Send first semester grades to colleges, if necessary.

q       Verify that colleges have received your applications.

q       Send thank-you notes to your recommendation sources.

 

February:

q       Review the SAR (Student Aid Report) to make sure the information is correct.  You should receive it 4-6 weeks after you submit your FAFSA (1-2 weeks if submit your FAFSA electronically.)

 

March-April:

q       Check the mail for admissions letters and financial aid awards.

q       Compare your admission offers.  Ask your guidance counselor to help you weigh your options.

q       Contact financial aid office if you have any special financial aid circumstances.

q       If waitlisted, notify the admissions office if you’re still interested.

q       Plan your summer internship, job or program.

q       Time for a decision!  Most schools ask that you choose your school by May 1.

 

May: 

q       Notify (in writing) the school you have decided to attend.

q       Make sure you’ve received the necessary forms for housing, health insurance, financial aid, etc.

q       Pursue additional student loan options.

q       Notify colleges of any private scholarship awards.

 

June-August:

q        Notify the guidance office to send your final transcript to your new school.

q        Double-check any final deadlines for housing, financial aid, etc.

q        Set up a projected first-year college budget.

 

CHAT NIGHT

Are you preparing to enter college next fall, but worrying about the cost?  Each year the Georgia Student Finance Commission offers a Chat Night on student financial aid, giving you the opportunity to ask questions anonymously via the Internet or telephone. The Sixth Annual Georgia Financial Aid Chat Night will be February 24 from 6 p.m.to 9 p.m.

There is no charge for this service.  You may participate by logging on to www.gsfc.org or by calling 1-800-505-GSFC.
